Felt a need to contribute something to the community here.I just thought I'd throw together some notes on my recent Ryzen build. The AsRock Killer x370 SLI/ac motherboard ships with the 1.50 BIOS, which does not include internet flash (vital for future BIOS updates). The upgrade to the current stable 1.60 BIOS can be tricky if you've never done that before, so I'll include notes on that. I also hadn't seen many builds with 32GB RAM, so I wanted to confirm compatibility here. I (very gently) pushed them apart and aligned them correctly. Everything else on the board appeared to be in good condition.I installed the CPU, cooler, RAM, and M.2 drive on the board outside of the case.

The RAM slots on this board threw me off, since only the top side of the slot has a movable clip. The bottom of the slots do not have any movable parts. I found it easiest to push in the side near the top first and then the side near the bottom second. Both sides will make a clicking noise when the RAM locks into place.In the case, I placed all the standoffs in locations marked ATX. With the Define R5 case, there ends up being one extra screw hole on this motherboard that will not get a standoff (unless you have extras).

I left the second screw hole from the bottom on the left side empty (without a standoff or screw), which is probably OK.I then installed the GPU, power connectors, case cables, etc. I powered it on and was able to get into BIOS! So far so good. By the way, to get the 8-pin power connector through the hole at the top of the R5, you'll probably need to remove the grommet, thread it through the grommet & hole, then replace the grommet. BIOS UPDATEMy next step was to update the BIOS. The 1.60 BIOS update can be found under support on the motherboard product page on the AsRock site.

I'd highly recommend doing the DOS version of the update. The instructions for the DOS update are not very detailed, so I'll share what I did (Disclaimer: do this at your own risk. I take no responsibility for your actions. Updating the BIOS can result in a bricked motherboard.):.Boot up Ubuntu 16.04.2 live usb on a different computer.

(This may work on the ryzen build, but I used my old PC to do these steps.).Insert a USB stick with nothing on it and format it to FAT (formatting will erase all data).Install unetbootin (from terminal: sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y unetbootin).Start unetbootin by typing unetbootin in terminal. Make sure the Distribution radio button is selected. Select FreeDOS version 1.0. Type Should be USB drive. Select the proper drive. You can find this by typing sudo fdisk -l in terminal.

Hit OK and let it finish.Unzip the DOS BIOS file downloaded from the AsRock website. Mine had a single file named X370KLA160.exe. Copy this file to the bootable USB drive made in step 4. Eject the USB drive to ensure everything is copied.Shut down the computer, and restart. Hit F11 to get into boot selection.There were two options for the usb drive: USB and UEFI. The UEFI did not boot. Select the USB version on the boot screen.It should then boot into DOS.

Select default (I think the only option on the first screen), then select boot without drivers (I think option 2) on the second screen.By default you'll be on the A: drive. The exe file will likely not be here.

You can check the files in the current directory by typing dir. I had to type B: to switch to B:, but you may have to type C. The file was in the top level of the B: drive for me. Type in the first few letters of the filename e.g. X370 and hit tab to autocomplete.

Then hit enter and pray. You'll be prompted to press enter if things go well, then the computer will reboot and update the bios.DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING AND BE PATIENT. When it rebooted, it hung on the startup bios screen for about a minute before the BIOS update window appeared. It may run slowly at times. Hopefully you will get a success message. Reboot and shutdown two times after successful BIOS installation before making any changes to the BIOS.

If something goes wrong here, you may need to RMA.TESTINGAfter I installed the BIOS update, I tried setting the memory xmp profile to 2666 MHz. I saved/rebooted.

This caused a bootloop and I could not get back into the BIOS. I followed the instructions for moving the CMOS jumper from pins 1&2 to 2&3 (with the power unplugged) to clear the CMOS. This allowed me to boot back into the BIOS.I am currently running 10 passes of all memtest86 tests to test the RAM. This is probably overkill, but I'd rather identify RAM problems now rather than later. It took an hour to get to the final test of the first pass, so this will run overnight.I won't be able to test the M.2 drive until memtest86 completes.

It did show up in the boot selection, so that's a good sign. Also, the screw that came with that drive was too small, so I had to use the screw included with the motherboard. OTHER NOTESI needed so much RAM (and chose Ryzen for this build) due to some big-ish machine learning projects I do for fun & profit. Now that I know the Corsair 16GB sticks are compatible, I'll probably max it out to 64GB. The libraries I use will love having 16 threads, and, of course, ryzen could not be beaten in price/perf (and AMD's openness - e.g.

Freesync, etc).I really wanted the x370 Taichi motherboard, but I picked up the Killer instead when it was in stock for a few hours last week on newegg. So far I'm very happy with my choice. I've only used AsRock for the past 6 years and haven't had any problems with them. Install went very smoothly. Rebooted into password prompt, and didn't have to pass nomodeset, etc. Immediately updated installed packages and then upgraded to kernel 4.10. Psensor is showing idle temps around 39C. Very hot in my room, and that temp is similar to my i5 3570k with a noctua NH-D15.If the display goes to sleep, it seems like unity freezes up upon resume.

The ALC892 codec has a 'punchy'/harsh sound relative to my Z77 Extreme6 (ALC898). Any recommendations on a good internal soundcard?. Added the default Ubuntu AMD microcode proprietary driver. This did not help the display sleep/PC suspend issue. Will try switching from Nouveau display driver to NVIDIA 375.39 and see if that helps.

The 375.39 driver made it so that resume from suspend does not freeze the computer, but there are graphics glitches/corruption (weird borders around windows, etc). Will try the 340.102 driver next. Unable to boot into Ubuntu after switching to the 340.102 driver, even with passing nomodeset/nosplash. Going to give manjaro a try. Before doing that, I updated the BIOS to 1.63 via usb instant flash. Left all settings default.

Manjaro/Gnome is working really well at the moment.3/27. Too used to ubuntu to replace it as my base system at the moment. Installed 16.10 and it seems to be working really well.had a few compiz errors, but it's mostly stable. Initially had installed kernel 4.10, but now on 4.8.0-44-generic, and it seems to be working okay as well. The 1.63 bios has a bug for me where the boot selection screen is blank.and dragging the mouse cursor around the screen reveals pixels/blocks of what should be the boot selection menu, but nothing in that menu can be clicked on except for going into bios options or using default boot.

Clearing cmos did not help. Not a huge problem since you can override boot selection in bios menu. No CPU temperature sensors reporting anything in psensor. Lm-sensors did not do anything either. I did see that may add lmsensors support, but have not had time to audit the code on github yet.4/4. Using BIOS 2.0 now.

Didn't notice any changes. Boot selection screen still 'corrupt'.

Need to try pulling battery or using a different GPU. Not a big deal.

Temperature sensors are working.probably my fault here. Run sensors-detect and just say yes to everything. Had to put a line in /etc/modules that said 'nct6775' (without quotes) & reboot. This made a bunch of sensors show up in psensor, including CPUTIN, AUXTIN, fan speeds, etc. So that seems to be working. Tried to get ram over 2133. Increased timings quite a bit.

Didn't want to touch the voltage. Couldn't get to 2666 or even 2400.

These sticks are 1.2 v (versus 1.35). Ran a bunch more memtest86 this week @ default speed/timings. Had a fail on the 8th pass. Returning this ram to be safe. Will report back when the new ram comes in (haven't decided what to order yet). I couldn't get my memory right with this board so I set it in Ryzen Master.

Works perfectly at 2666MHz which it is rated at using the default XMP profile detailed from Corsair. I called myself setting it to the XMP profile in the bios, but all it did was boot loop for about 5 or 6 times before deciding on 2133 with tighter timings than even the XMP profile. Board needs some mouseover instructions about what the settings are for. The manual doesn't even list a 1/3 of the settings that are in the bios.
